Interview

CineAsian Films (CAF): What inspired you to make Rendezvous?
Sche-Hao (Thomas) Wang: Rendezvous was inspired by my personal experience. My goal was to make the film stylish and entertaining while it could convey inspiring messages to the audience. I had a difficult time dealing with my relationship a few years ago but was able to recover thanks to a film that inspired me. In return, I hope my film can somehow do the same thing to cure someone who needs to move on with their life.

CAF: What were some of the challenges you faced while making this film?
Wang: The film was one of the short films made in the class where 3 students are responsible for making 3 films by rotating their positions. However, when we started to make Rendezvous, one of our trio mates could no longer make the film with us because of personal issues. Therefore, the 3-person responsibilities were suddenly left to the rest two of us. The biggest challenge for me was to take on more responsibilities within the same schedule while trying to maintain the quality of the film as good as possible. Another challenge was because of Covid protocols, we needed to have an urgent replacement for an actor before the shooting day. It appeared to be an impossible mission, but it turned out to be a beautiful accident. I was really surprised and satisfied by the new actor we eventually found. The film would have been very different if we had not had the actor and his good performance.

CAF: What do you hope people can take away from watching this?
Wang: In the film, Henry, the protagonist, learns to accept the reality he dared not face. He learns that it takes courage to accept one’s mistakes and seize the opportunity which can lead him toward happiness.

I hope to lead the audience to undertake this journey with Henry throughout the film. Hopefully, they will not only be emotionally engaged but also receive some inspiration as he does.

CAF: Are you working on anything new right now?
Wang: Yes, I just finished some other short film shoots, which are currently under postproduction. At present, I am working on another short script, which can potentially become my thesis that I am planning to shoot during my last year of the MFA program.
